Diving and Snorkeling in Nha Trang – When, where, and how?
Do you want to explore the picture of the colorful sea beneath the deep sea? Scuba diving and snorkeling to see corals in Nha Trang will definitely be one of the interesting activities for you in the journey. Let find it out in this article!
1. An ideal time for diving and snorkeling in Nha Trang
Hot or cool weather does not affect the diving process much. However, two factors must be ensured when scuba diving is clear water and no strong waves or strong winds to ensure safety.
The ideal diving time is from April to October, especially in July to August, when the water is clear, light winds and temperature are also suitable for you to see the coral reefs and small colorful tropical fish with lots of colors. The average visibility is about 10 meters, in good weather, the visibility can be up to 20 meters.
Although the diving center is still open, you should not dive in December to mid-February because at this time the sea is opaque, visibility is limited.
2. Nice places for diving and snorkeling in Nha Trang
a. Hon Mun Island
The distance from the stone bridge port to Hon Mun island is about 12 km. It takes about 20 minutes by canoe (300,000 VND/pax) and about 1 hour by wooden boat (250,000 VND/pax)
Due to the mixture of hot and cold water, Hon Mun is the focus and development of thousands of rare coral and fish species in the world. The island has about 1500 species of sea creatures living in a total of more than 2000 species in the world. This can be considered as the most beautiful diving spot compared to the places that have been put into exploitation.
b. Monkey Island – Hon Lao Island
Located in the middle of Nha Phu Bay, 15km to the North of Nha Trang, Monkey Island is a small island with the shape of a javelin, which runs straight to the sea. The reason for calling “Monkey Island” is that there are about 1200 monkeys on the island.
In Hon Mun, tourists who want to dive must have a “high level” because it is more than 20m deep here. But in Monkey Island, the depth is only 3 – 5m so visitors can rest assured exploring the ocean without fear of exhaustion. Instead of jumping from the boat into the sea like at Hon Mun, here you can climb the ledges, follow the small path to the beach and from the beach keep wading along with your guide until the water comes across the shoulder.
c. Hon Mot Island
Hon Mot is located about 9 km from the city of Nha Trang to the Southeast. Hon Mot area is less than 1 square kilometer, therefore, it is considered an island with the smallest area of Nha Trang Bay. On the island, there is also a small fishing village, with about 200 people living.
Around Hon Mot Island, there are also many coral reefs of all shapes and colors, extremely diverse and the water level is quite shallow, even if you do not swim too well, you can still see them.

2. The history of Nha Trang Cathedral
At the end of the 19th century (around 1885), there were only a few hundred Catholics in Nha Trang. In 1886, the French built this church to meet the needs of religious activities for this population and for French officials.
They temporarily built a small chapel on the coast of Nha Trang, which is now the area of Nha Trang Bishopric. Louis Vallet (1869-1945) – a French priest watching parishioners in Nha Trang – intended to establish a parish in Nha Trang along with building a church for this new parish.
On September 3, 1928, the church was started construction on a small mountain, named Mount Bong with an altitude of about 12 meters. By June of 1929, the footpath to the mountain for pedestrians (including 53 steps) located in the North was completed.
In March 1930, the building of the parish house (house for non-liturgical activities of the parish) was completed.
On May 14, 1933, during the feast of St. Jeanne d’Arc, father Louis Vallet chose Christ the King as the title of church patron.
On July 29, 1934, the Apostolic Nuncio Dreyer blessed the bell, nicknamed Thérèse of the Child Jesus, given by a female in Saigon. The bell tower was inaugurated on December 3, 1935.
Father Louis Vallet passed away on October 24, 1945. His body was buried at the foot of the mountain, on the right side of the road to the church. Around 1969, the clock on the tower was broken and has not been repaired until 1978 and has continued to work ever since.
3. The architecture of Nha Trang Cathedral
The highest point of the church is the place where the Cross is placed on top of the bell tower, 38 m high from the road surface.
The church has a large dome, rose-shaped doorways in typical gothic style. Inside the church, there is a large and airy space, divided into a sanctuary area and the area behind the sanctuary very pure and solemn.
When you walk to the church, you will see the architecture is divided into 3 distinct parts: the top part consists of a corridor and two bell towers, the middle is the colorful glass windows while the door is decorated by roses. The middle floor is also the venue for the Catholic rite of the faithful. And the last floor is the door.
The highlight of the church is 2 bronze bells hanging on the bell-tower, which is manufactured and supplied directly from the famous French bell-making company – Bourdon Carillond. Besides, on the bell tower, there is a big clock with 4 faces facing in 4 directions.
The church is very large and lots of light are combined with curved arches, pointing straight to the sky, like a very harmonious and beautiful arrow shape. The walls are modeled by paintings of the suffering life of the Lord through 14 stages of the cross.
Although over 90 years old, the unique structure of the mountain church still retains the architectural values from ancient times. Currently, the church is included in the list of monuments and landscapes of Khanh Hoa province.

Bai Tu Long Bay vs Halong Bay: What’s the difference?
If Halong Bay is a well-known name on Vietnam’s tourism map, Bai Tu Long Bay is relatively unknown to many, especially foreign tourists.
In fact, Bai Tu Long Bay has a much larger area than Halong Bay. The number of limestone mountains is also greater and the air is also more peaceful and fresh because it is less affected by a large number of tourists every year like Halong Bay.
What is the difference between Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay? Let’s find out in this article
1. The difference about condition between Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay
Halong Bay is a well-known name on Vietnam’s tourism map. Therefore, every year, this place receives a large number of tourists from home and abroad.
With such a large number of tourists, especially in the peak season, the scenery on the Bay will be more bustling and noisy due to bustling tours and boats. Moreover, the amount of waste will be more in some destinations.
The local tourism industry has not exploited Bai Tu Long Bay, so this place still has a quiet and wild beauty. There are almost no tourists or other tourist boats anywhere. Bai Tu Long Bay is a hidden gift for tourists who want to explore a wilderness without an intensive tour guide.
Tourism promotion and activities have not been developed yet. In addition, there are quite a few cruises allowed to go through Bai Tu Long Bay, so the scenery on the Bay is quiet and less bustling than Halong Bay.
A small number of guests also make the environment here more fresh and pleasant, which is suitable for families and couples who want to have time to relax and rest.
2. The difference about attractions between Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay
Due to the exploitation of tourism and promotion, Halong Bay is known for its more discoveries. Some outstanding places to visit in Halong include Titop Island, Tuan Chau Island, Mat Rong Island, Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung Cave, Luon Cave, Ba Trai Dao Beach, Tung Sau Pearl Village, Cua Van fishing village, …
Bai Tu Long Bay has fewer attractions (due to the potentiality of tourism and exploitation). Some places to visit include Bai Tu Long National Park, Quan Lan Island, Minh Chau Island, Vung Vieng Fishing Village, Ba Mun Island, Tra Ngo Lon Island, …
The islands, caves, and attractions in Halong Bay have been mostly discovered. Here, there are many entertainment spots, hotels, restaurants, markets, … so it will be convenient when you need something. However, due to being exploited a lot, it will lose its original, untouched nature.
In contrast, in Bai Tu Long Bay, the services provided are few so you may have difficulty finding hotels, dining or fun activities but you know what? The feeling when entering a pristine cave on the Bai Tu Long Bay or when exploring Bai Tu Long National Park is different from Halong Bay! It’s extremely new like you are conquering an island without a guide!
3. The difference about activities between Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay
Basically, the activities on both Bays are quite similar. At Halong Bay, you can participate in exciting experience and discovery activities such as:
– Kayaking at Luon cave, Ba Hang area, Cua Van area, Cong Dam, Hon Chan sand beach, …
– Swimming and diving in areas such as Titop beach, Soi Sim, Tuan Chau, and Bai Chay
– Fishing at locations such as Titop island, Cong Do lake, Cua Van fishing village, …
– Cycling at places like Cat Ba National Park (on Cat Ba Island, near Halong Bay)
– Tuk-tuk riding on Cat Ba island at Halong Bay
– BBQ on beach
– Climbing: You can choose some limestone mountains with a height of 25-30 meters to challenge yourself. From a height above jumping into the Bay is an adventurous but exciting experience.
On Bai Tu Long Bay, activities such as scuba diving, BBQ on the beach or cycling tours will be difficult or not available.
4. The difference about the cruises between Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay
Because Bai Tu Long Bay is still being evaluated by the Ministry of Tourism and other competent agencies to assess tourism potentials, exploit and build tourist facilities.
At the same time, there are areas with rich and rare flora and fauna that need to be preserved, so few ships are licensed to go through this area or organize tourism activities in the Bay area. So when you come to Bai Tu Long you will see there are very few cruises.
Conversely, if you come to Halong Bay, you will see many yachts and tours organized on the Bay. Especially in peak seasons, the Bay full of boats and tourists.
As such, it will be easy to book a tour with a cruise to explore Halong Bay. Meanwhile, finding a good service yacht exploring both Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay will require you to take the time to find more information.
Above is some reference information about the differences between Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. If you want to explore both bays in just one trip, you can consider traveling on Emperor Cruise. This is one of the few cruises with many utilities, good services and itinerary to explore both famous bays.
