Hue

HOW Domestic flights or train from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. By road from Danang and Hoi An.

WHAT The former imperial capital, with the remains housing palaces, pavilions and temples, was largely destroyed but is being renovated. The tombs of the emperors to be visited include those of Tu Duc, Khai Dinh and Minh Mang. A highlight is a cruise along the Perfume River with a stop at the 17th-century Thien Mu Pagoda.

WHEN Hue’s weather is changeable, but the dry season is from March to August with high temperatures. The rainy season from September to January coincides with the high season for visits to Vietnam and there is a risk of heavy rain from October to December. The first three months of the year can be a little cooler.
